Client Newsletters

Provide clients with valuable information that they want and need.

An electronic newsletter is an excellent way to position you and your top employees as industry experts, while promoting your services and products and the same time.

You must give your readers relevant and timely information if you want your newsletter to be read. Provide news on topics that will be of interest to your reader, not just what you want them to know about your company. Speak to what is important to them. A good rule of thumb is to make your newsletter 80% educational and 20% promotional. If done right, your newsletter will be perceived as giving your clients valuable information that they want and need.

What to Include

Determining what your audience is interested in is the critical first step: their issues, concerns, problems, challenges, and hot topics. Armed with this information, you can come up with the topics for your newsletter that will interest your readers.

Here are some suggestions on newsletter content:

• Highlight interesting and timely industry news, legislation, trends, and challenges.
• Feature an “Advice from the Expert” column.
• Include a brief case study to showcase how your product or service has met a unique challenge, overcome a problem, or successfully helped a client reach a business goal. Include client quotes whenever possible.
• Feature a new product, service or promotion.
• Consider having a column by a business associate in a related field.
A win-win for both of you.
• Highlight company news: speaking engagements or major new hire
• Include articles you have had published, recent press releases, or the highlights of a recent white paper .
• Use images and photos to break up the copy, make your newsletter more visually appealing, and help tell your story.
• Add your contact information and a link to your website.

News Letter Tips

Start a clipping file to gather ideas for topics and information. When interesting news comes across your desk, just put it into the file. You might come across a good topic at a conference or seminar. You will be surprised at how fast you can build up a supply of information that will be of value to your clients.

Headlines with punch are key in drawing the reader’s attention. A client of mine is in the business of selling mapping software to emergency responders in cities across the nation. In his newsletter, a headline like “City Maps Launches New Application” will be perceived as just another product announcement. But we used...
